Multidimensional Health™
Health is not created by biology alone.
A framework. A way of seeing.
When I first qualified as a Chartered Physiotherapist, I believed my role was to understand the body, identify what had gone wrong and help people recover. It was good work, meaningful work, and I loved it.
Yet as the years passed, the people who came through my clinic door taught me something no textbook ever had.
Very few people arrived carrying only a physical problem.
A painful shoulder might have started with an injury, but it often belonged to someone who had spent years carrying everyone else's responsibilities. Persistent back pain could sit quietly beside grief that had never really been acknowledged. Exhaustion was rarely only about being busy; more often it reflected a nervous system living in survival mode for so long that it no longer remembered what rest felt like. Menopause was never simply about hormones. Recovery from surgery was never just about tissue healing.
The biopsychosocial model transformed healthcare because it reminded us that health is shaped not only by biology but also by psychology and our social world. That understanding continues to underpin my clinical practice.
Over time, however, I found myself asking another question.
What if the picture is even bigger than that?
What if our health is also shaped by the environments we live in, the relationships that nourish or diminish us, the meaning we find in our lives, the values we live by, the communities we belong to, the losses we carry, the stories our nervous system has quietly stored away and, for many people, a sense of something greater than ourselves?
What if these dimensions are not separate from physiology but constantly interacting with it — influencing how we adapt, cope, move through illness and ultimately heal?
That question became the beginning of Multidimensional Health™.
A Framework. A Way of Seeing.
Multidimensional Health™ is not a new therapy, nor is it an alternative to evidence-based physiotherapy.
My work remains firmly rooted in science. I believe in good assessment, critical thinking, evidence-informed practice and understanding the remarkable physiology of the human body.
At the same time, healing cannot be reduced to biomechanics because people are not collections of joints, muscles and hormones. We are living systems whose biology is continually responding to our experiences, relationships, environment and the meaning we make of our lives.
The Five Dimensions
These are not separate layers stacked one on top of another. They are interdependent fields of influence, continually shaping and responding to each other. A change in one dimension can alter the whole system.
01
Emotional
The felt experience of being human: joy, grief, anger, fear, love, shame, longing, vulnerability and the emotions that have been expressed, suppressed, defended against or carried silently in the body. Emotion is not an interruption to physiology. It participates in it.
02
Psychological
Thoughts, beliefs, perceptions, identity, meaning, memory, learned behaviour and the conscious patterns through which we interpret ourselves and the world. This dimension includes the stories that organise experience and the protective strategies that once helped us cope, survive and belong.
03
Physiological
The physical body: physiology, structure, movement, hormones, breath, pain, sleep, energy, nutrition, function and the biological processes through which life is expressed.
04
Environmental
The conditions in which a life is lived: home, work, relationships, family, community, culture, nature, social expectations, economic realities, sensory load and the systems that support, constrain, nourish or diminish us. Health does not occur outside context.
05
Heart Field / Sub Conscious
The deeper field beneath conscious thought: intuition, implicit memory, energetic and relational resonance, spiritual meaning, inherited and embodied knowing, and the truths that may be sensed before they can be explained. This is not positioned in opposition to science. It acknowledges that human experience includes dimensions that are real and influential even when they are not fully available to conscious language or conventional measurement.
The Heart Field is the meeting place of deep listening, compassion, connection and truth. The Sub Conscious carries what has been learned, stored, protected or left unfinished outside ordinary awareness. In safe, embodied work, what has been hidden may become available — not through force, but through presence, relationship and the body's own timing.
How Change Moves Through the Dimensions
A physiological symptom may carry emotional information. Psychological beliefs may shape physiological stress. Environmental demand may keep the nervous system in adaptation. A Sub Conscious pattern may influence relationships and behaviour long before it becomes a conscious thought. The Heart Field may register coherence, safety, truth or disconnection before the analytical mind finds language for it.
The purpose of the framework is not to explain everything through one dimension. It is to ask a better question: What is interacting here, and what conditions would allow this person's system to respond differently?
The Principles
- Everything is connected.
- Patterns matter more than parts.
- Awareness precedes change.
- The body carries information.
- Safety creates conditions for change.
- Knowledge alone is rarely enough.
- Human beings exist within larger systems.
I do not see my role as fixing people.
Healing is not something I do to another human being. My role is to create the conditions in which the nervous system can settle, awareness can emerge, and the body is given the opportunity to do what it has been designed to do from the beginning: adapt, integrate and, where possible, heal.
That is why truth matters. Not my truth. Yours.
Because the body rarely lies. It adapts. It protects. It compensates. It whispers before it shouts. If we are willing to become curious rather than critical, it often reveals a wisdom waiting patiently beneath the noise.
Not another model telling you what is wrong with you. A different way of understanding what has always been right within you.
